Sex Toy Review: Hot Octopuss Pulse III

Published: MAY 24, 2019 | Updated: FEBRUARY 11, 2021
This amazing sex toy is flying under the radar - and that needs to change.

Editor's Note - February 11, 2021: The Hot Octopuss Pulse III Solo has been discontinued. The Pulse Solo Essential is the closest version to the Pulse III Solo as it does not have a remote. Other similar options include the Pulse Solo Lux, which has one remote, or the Pulse Duo Lux, which has two remotes.

The Verdict: Kinkly logoKinkly logoKinkly logoKinkly logoKinkly half logo(Out of five)

Every once in a while, a sex toy comes along that actually manages to reinvent the wheel. It wasn’t so long ago that we didn’t have a significant selection of toys to choose from. The sex toy industry seemed to work in waves: someone invents a new type of sensation and then others spend a couple of years mimicking and possibly refining that design. Wash, rinse, repeat.

There have been a number of products that have come along to make us come that have found a place in the hall of fame of sexual pleasure. We-Vibe. Fleshlight. Rabbit. Magic Wand. These excellent products will probably always grace our bedside tables. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t room for more. Even some that fly a little under the radar.

Hot Octopuss’ Pulse III Solo is a remarkable sex product that deserves far more notoriety than it currently receives. An award-winning wonder of both pleasure and potency, this new iteration of Pulse is every bit as satisfying and sensual as the previous versions. Somehow, though, Pulse isn’t quite as well-known as other toys - and that really needs to change. Here's my review of the Pulse III Solo.

About Hot Octopuss Pulse III Solo

Pulse III represents one of those waves in sex industry development, but it remains a unique bit of awesome. Featuring a completely unique design and brilliant functionality, this wonderful product, dubbed the "Guybrator," harnesses a completely different type of vibration, one that isn’t really vibration at all.

What sets Pulse III apart from other penis pleasure products is that it doesn’t rely on the typical stroking motion to create amazing sensation. Most penis toys mimic penetration, be it vaginal, anal or oral. The Hot Octopuss Pulse III Solo, on the other hand, centers the user’s pleasure on a specific and oft-neglected bit of anatomy: the frenulum.

Featuring a distinct wrap-around design, Pulse focuses all of its considerable power on that little elastic band of tissue just below the urethral opening. This special little spot both helps to retract the foreskin and is also wonderfully sensitive. Hot Octpuss recognized the potential of the frenulum and developed Pulse to directly stimulate this hot spot. It turns out the erotic potential of the frenulum is both incredibly effective and efficient when properly stimulated.

Now, it’s not as if folks haven’t tried to fiddle the frenulum before. Fingers, tongues, vibrations - all of these can give the frenulum some fantastic fun. But trust me when I say none is as amazing as what the Pulse can provide.

Instead of offering the traditional vibration used in so many other sex toys, Hot Octopuss invented what they call PulsePlate technology. Instead of high frequency vibration, the Pulse features a dime-sized oscillating plate that nestles directly against the frenulum. The unique sensations this technology provides are, quite frankly, unbelievable.

And I don’t mean that lightly because the Pulse makes possible something I never thought possible - a powerful masturbatory orgasm with no hands and no stroking!

I honestly did not think this possible other than through prostate stimulation. However, the Pulse is such a breath of fresh gasps that I actually had to stop it to avoid having an orgasm way too soon. The sensation was that intense, and I barely got to try all of the different oscillation patterns and speeds. Don’t worry, I’ve tried it many times since to ensure it wasn’t just a novelty popshot.

Hello, Hands-Free Fun

While the frenulum stimulation is definitely the main selling point of this sex toy, I have to give a standing ovation to Hot Octopuss for the hands-free capability to this product. This functionality not only makes the toy versatile and awesome to use, it also makes the Pulse III available to people who have motor skill challenges. Very few penis-focused sex toys are actually available to a variety of users because they require stroking action. The Hot Octopuss Pulse III, on the other hand, can be attached, even when the penis is flaccid, and will stay in place throughout masturbation.

Another amazing benefit is that Pulse can be used, to orgasm, while the penis remains flaccid. The involuntary reaction I experienced can be used for those dealing with erectile dysfunction, taking hormones to transition or even those who have paralysis. This product could even allow those who might otherwise not be able to produce sperm for procreation to become a parent. Pretty cool!

Of course, this toy also includes the other basic bells and whistles we now expect from a high-quality toy: It's made of body-safe silicone, it's fully waterproof and it's rechargeable.

It Isn't a Perfect Toy, Though

OK, let me state a couple caveats here: the Pulse doesn’t always stay in place on its own and it isn’t the easiest to turn on. When it comes to positioning, I think it really depends on the shape and girth of your penis. Sometimes it goes on and stays on for me and other times it slides to the side, particularly when used on its highest speed. To fix this, I have to gently hold it in place and other times I just turn over and use my bed to hold it to my frenulum happy spot.

The force it takes to activate the unit is the more troubling issue. The Pulse is soooo close to being a truly accessible sex toy. Unfortunately, turning it on and manipulating the controls can be a challenge that does require some hand strength. I hope this is something Hot Octopuss looks into for the next version.

Pulse is my favorite penis-focussed sex toy of all time.

With my privilege duly noted, I have to say, Pulse is my favorite penis-focussed sex toy of all time. Strokers are fun and all, but the I have never experienced pleasure quite like what the Pulse gives me. It belongs in that hall of fame, and I'm sure it will get there some day. I highly recommend adding this toy to your tickle trunk. And I really hope Hot Octopuss improves the interface to make the Pulse that much better.
