Polyandry

Updated: DECEMBER 21, 2016

Polyandry is the practice of being married to multiple men at the same time. It falls under the umbrella term "polygamy," but specifically refers to the practice of having multiple husbands at the same time.

More About Polyandry

While records indicate that far fewer societies practice polyandry than its counter-part polygyny, it is practiced in several parts of the world. Polyandry is, in some societies, closely related to the cultural concept of partible paternity, in which a child has more than one father. It can also be practiced as a means of limiting population growth and preserving familial ownership over land.
