When we see something described as a “clitoral vibrator” it might seem like where and how to use it is already spelled out for us. Does anyone else find that limiting? A vibrator is not the boss of me! Not to mention the fact that it implies that one needs a specific vibrator for whatever it is they want to accomplish, which is so not true. So, today we’re going to look at so-called “clitoral vibrators”, what they are, what they do and ways you can think outside the clitoral box when it comes to using them.

First thing's first: WTF is a “clitoral vibrator"?

Well, this question has both a simple answer and a complex one. Simple answer: A clitoral vibrator is a vibrator meant to be used on the clitoris. More complex answer: A clitoral vibrator is a vibrator that can be used on a clitoris. See, the thing is, when you look at a shop’s collection, you will probably notice that their “clitoral vibrator” selection will feature very small vibrators, large wands, toys designed to deliver a suction-like sensation and, frankly, some regular old vibrators. The term casts a pretty wide net. That being said, it makes sense that these things are multi-use.

So, how else can I can use a clitoral vibrator?

There are many answers to this question but today I’m going to give you five of them. Be warned, you are in for some surprises!

All Over the Vulva

OK, I'm kind of cheating here ... we're still talking about the clitoris. The thing is, when we say “clitoris” many of us picture the tiny nub that we were taught comprises all things clitoral. The fact of the matter is that the internal clitoris is HUGE. It actually has legs that extend down the labia on both sides and an attachment point on the pubic bone. So, right there we have an indication as to why it might feel good to leave the spot we’ve been told is the clitoris and branch out. Take a small vibe like the WeVibe Tango and run it down either side of the labia. Use a larger wand like the Original Magic Wand by gently pressing it against the pubic bone. If your vibe has a rounder or broader shape like the We-Vibe Wish, cup it against the vulva. Take the time to explore. You might find a whole bunch of things that feel great!

On the Nipples

It’s a long-standing joke among sex toy reviewers that saying a vibe is “good for nipple stimulation” is code for “this vibe doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do" ... but I’m actually serious about taking your clitoral toy a bit further north. Depending on your preferred methods of stimulation, you might find that something that surrounds the clitoris, like the Jimmyjane Form 2 or the Rianne S Moon vibrator, could be just as fun surrounding a nipple. Additionally, the whole range of toys that deliver suction-like stimulation to the clitoris (The Womanizer, The Satisfyer, the LELO SONA) can do that to great effect on the nipples as well. Finally, a simple, soft vibrator like the We-Vibe Wish can be great for body massage - including the nipples.

On a Penis-Bearing Partner

I’ll be honest: I’m not a huge fan of small clitoral vibrators for myself. That said, they can be a terrific addition to fellatio! Check in with your partner first to make sure they are amenable (I’m never a fan of “surprise your partner!”) and then experiment with touching a vibrator to their penis, their perineum (the spot behind the scrotum) or lightly running it along the testicles. You can even play with holding a vibrator to your throat while you perform fellatio - the vibration can actually be transmitted through your mouth for a unique sensation.

On the Head (Yes, Really)

Years ago I was hit with a raging migraine in the middle of an adult industry trade show. People were so sweet and helpful and one company sat me down at their booth and walked me through using a vibrator to relieve my pain. I later discovered that many of the internet’s migraine sufferers already knew this trick and were applying vibration to their foreheads in response to migraine. For me it doesn’t cure the headache but it can ease the symptoms. Plus, if you experience sudden onset headaches, a small clitoral vibe is easy to carry around for relief.

On the Sinuses (I swear, I'm not making this stuff up!)

One of my all-time favorite uses for small clitoral vibrators is cleaning the sinuses (I know, hot, right?). I learned this trick from Crista Anne a couple of years ago and it’s a cold and flu season lifesaver! How does it work? Take a small vibrator (I like the Screaming O Charged Positive or the We-Vibe Touch for this) and apply it to the point of the jaw below the ear - it helps to open your mouth here. Then, close your mouth and hold your teeth together while running your vibe slowly along the groove behind the ear, running to jawline. Then move on to the forehead and move the vibe slowly along the area above your eyebrows, moving in towards your nose. Repeat on the opposite side. Finally, place the vibrator just beside the ear, right next to the tragus, and (slowly and gently) move it along your face slightly underneath the cheek bone, towards the nose, but be certain not to go above the cheek bone. Move the vibe along until it touches the nose and hold it there for 5-10 seconds. Repeat on both sides. Seriously, I LOVE this. It clears your sinuses like nothing else!
