Lotus Sex Position

Updated: MAY 26, 2022

The Lotus sex position is a popular vaginal sex position. This position requires the penetrating partner to sit on the bed or floor in the lotus position, cross legged or with legs extended, as shown below. While extending the legs is easier, purists suggest this variation isn’t a "true" lotus sex position.

Lotus Sex Position. The penetrating partner sits with their legs straight in front of them. The receiving partner sits on top of the receiving partner's lap with their legs on either side of the penetrator's hips.

After the penetrating partner gets into position, the receiving partner then straddles their partner’s lap. The receiving partner wraps their legs around the penetrating partner’s waist. From this position, the penetrating partner can enter the receiving partner. The receiving partner may also wrap their arms around the penetrating partner’s torso for support. The penetrating partner may also hold onto their receiving partner for extra support. In this position the partners slowly rock together, rather than thrusting.

People have practiced the Lotus sex position for thousands of years. It featured in the Kama Sutra, which was published in the third century AD, but it may be much older than this. Its longstanding popularity is indicative of the pleasure it can bring couples.

The Lotus sex position is also known as the Lotus Blossom position and the Crossed Legs position. In tantra, it is called the Yab-Yum position.

More About Lotus Sex Position

The Lotus sex position can be an excellent choice for couples wanting more sensual intercourse. As it is a face-to-face position, it encourages couples to gaze into each other's eyes and sync their breathing. The position also lets them easily hug, kiss, and caress each other.

Although thrusting is not very feasible in this position, both partners can rock back and forth to grind on one another. This slow, sensual motion increases the romance of this position. It also enhances sensual pleasure and may trigger an orgasm. Note though that while orgasms may occur, this position is more about nurturing the connection lovers have than sexual release.

The receiving partner can vary the position slightly by reaching their arms underneath their partner’s arms and grabbing their shoulders. Using the penetrating partner’s shoulders for support makes grinding and rocking together easier. The receiving partner can also lean back a little for deeper penetration which stimulates the G-spot.

The penetrating partner’s hands can also roam to increase pleasure for their partner. This is the perfect position for the penetrating partner to penetrate their partner’s anus using a finger or a sex toy.

Performing the Lotus sex position is relatively easy, although the penetrating partner will need to be reasonably flexible to bend their legs into the Lotus position. The extended leg position is a good choice for less-flexible people. While it is a low-impact sexual position, the penetrative partner should also be strong enough to hold their partner in the seated position during sex.

If the penetrating partner needs some extra support, wedge some pillows or sex furniture (like the Liberator Wedge or Jaz) underneath the butt or knees. You can then lean back against these without breaking the position if you start feeling tired. You can also consider doing the Lotus position near a wall to lean back onto its firm surface to give your core muscles a break.

The receiving partner must be careful they do not sit or lean on the penetrating partner’s ankles. This can put pressure on the joints which can cause discomfort or even injury.
