INFOGRAPHIC: Why We Need Sex Ed

Published: NOVEMBER 9, 2012 | Updated: JUNE 30, 2020
Half of teens are sexually active, but many don't know the basics of sex education.

Although the media loves to dramatize teen relationships, and even pregnancies, it's safe to say that teenagers have been experimenting with sex since, well, since there have been teenagers. According to a National Health Statistics Report released in August 2012, fully half of American teens between the ages of 15 and 19 (55 percent of girls and 58 percent of boys) had already experienced some sort of sexual activity with the opposite sex. And while this experimentation may be a normal part of growing up, the stakes are high. According to this infographic from PublicHealthDegree.com, one in four sexually active teens will contract a sexually transmitted disease this year; every two minutes, three American teens will get pregant. The infographic argues that comprehensive sexual education is the answer. Check it out, and tell us what you think.
