Non-Latex

Updated: FEBRUARY 15, 2016

Non-latex is a general term to describe any substance that does not contain latex. Non-latex substances are often used to create sex toys and condoms as they do not contain latex. Latex is a common allergen. Lambskin, polyurethane, polyisoprene, and nitrile are common non-latex materials.

More About Non-Latex

People most commonly seek out non-latex condoms and sex toys because they are allergic to latex. If individuals with an allergy or sensitivity to latex are exposed to the material they may suffer skin irritations or hives, watery eyes, or difficulty breathing. Choosing non-latex products allows these individuals to enjoy sexual expression without the painful, uncomfortable, or embarrassing side effects.

However, allergies are not the only reason that someone may choose non-latex condoms or sex toys. Some people prefer using non-latex goods made from natural sources because they believe that the lack of chemicals is better for the body. Other individuals may seek out non-latex goods simply because they like the way that they perform.

Since latex condoms are the most commonly available, some people are concerned about the safety of non-latex alternatives. It’s important to note that all condoms must meet Food and Drug Administration standards for breakage, certification, and testing. They are just as safe as latex condoms. However, the large pores in lambskin condoms allow some small particles to pass through. While they can prevent pregnancy, they are not recommended for protection against HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. Most non-latex condoms also expire more quickly than latex equivalents. It’s important to check the date printed on the package for maximum efficiency.
