Reverse Missionary Position

Updated: APRIL 25, 2024

The Reverse Missionary position is an intimate vaginal and anal sex position. It gets its name because the receiving partner lies on top of the penetrating partner. This is the reverse of the positions in "traditional" Missionary style sex.

Reverse Missionary Sex Position. The penetrating partner lays down on the bed with their legs in the air. The receiving partner then goes between the penetrating partner's legs to be penetrated. It looks like the Missionary sex position - but flipping the traditional positions.

To get into this sex position, the penetrating partner lies on their back on the bed or floor. The receiving partner straddles the penetrating partner then leans forward so they’re lying down, face-to-face. They also extend their legs out straight on the outside of the penetrating partner’s legs and put their hands down by the penetrating partner’s sides to support their body weight. In this position, the penetrating partner can enter the receiving partner.

Both partners can grind their bodies together in the same rhythm or take turns doing the work here. Any partner can take control of the rhythm, angle, and intensity of the sexual experience. While the receiving partner is on top, the power is relatively equal in the Reverse Missionary position.

This position lends itself really well to using sex toys as there is room between your bodies to maneuver. If you'd like to explore it, a cock ring (as pictured) fits snuggly around a penis and offers a buzzworthy experience for both partners.

The Reverse Missionary position is excellent for G-spot, P-Spot and clitoral stimulation. Ensure you are both fully aroused to make the most of this position. Lubricant can enhance Reverse Missionary sex.

The Reverse Missionary position is also called inverse missionary position or inverted missionary position.

More About Reverse Missionary Position

The Reverse Missionary position is a very intimate sexual position as it puts partners face to face. Many people feel more connected to their partners gazing into their eyes and kissing during sex. Talking dirty in the Reverse Missionary position can make this move even hotter.

While the receiving partner may use their hands to support their own weight, the penetrating partner’s hands are free to wander. They could caress their partner’s butt, back, and arms in this sex position. As the Reverse Missionary sees both partners touching one another with virtually their whole body, it can be a real sensory overload.

Since the Reverse Missionary position puts couples so close, they tend to grind together rather than vigorously thrusting. This makes the Reverse Missionary position a relatively quiet sexual position. Many couples choose this position when they have sleeping children or flatmates or they are staying with friends or family members.

Although the penetrating partner has a more dominant role in most sexual positions, the Reverse Missionary position allows couples to play with these typical sex roles and spice things up.

Simply being on top can make the receiving partner feel more empowered and in control. Seeing their partner taking a new sexual role can be a real turn-on for dominant penetrating partners. Receiving partners can increase their dominance by pinning the penetrating partner’s wrists down with their hands or restraining them with hand and ankle cuffs.

As both partners are lying down, the Reverse Missionary position is relatively low impact. It’s great for gentle, romantic sex and relaxed sex after an energetic marathon session. As it does not put excessive strain on the body, it can also be helpful for partners who suffer from back pain. If the penetrating partner suffers back pain, they may feel more supported with a pillow or sex furniture under their lower back. This prop can also alter the angle of penetration slightly for deeper stimulation.
