Douching

Updated: JANUARY 30, 2017

Douching is a process that involves cleaning out or washing the vagina by flushing it with water or a mixture containing ingredients such as vinegar, iodine or baking soda that is mixed with water. The purpose of douching is to cleanse the vagina, eliminate odor, and rinse away lingering menstrual blood.

More About Douching

Many health professionals advise against the practice of douching because the vagina is self-cleansing. It can upset the balance of the vaginal flora and acidity. A healthy vagina will contain a balance of both good and bad bacteria to maintain a healthy, acidic environment. Douching can lead to an overgrowth of "bad" bacteria which can lead to infection.
