Body painting is a form of art that uses the human body as canvas. Temporary paint is applied on the skin to create a visual message. There are several types of body painting. Henna tattoo or temporary tattoo are both good examples, but body painting isn't just limited to these things. Face painting and full-body painting are also types of body painting.

Body painting has indigenous origins. Tribal cultures wore body paint for their ceremonies. The practice still exists among some of the tribes of New Zealand, Australia, Africa, and the islands of the Pacific. Western culture adopted body painting as a form of art, as well as a way to express political protest. Animal-rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) popularly used body painting to protest against luxury fashion company Burberry.
