Assigned Sex

Updated: JULY 1, 2019

Assigned sex, also known as assigned gender, refers to the sex and corresponding gender that an individual is assumed to have at birth, usually based on the biological birth sex of the individual. Generally, the sex of the individual at birth is the gender identity that is assumed during early years.

More About Assigned Sex

The sex and gender that is assigned to an individual at birth is not necessarily the sex or gender that they will identify with later in life. In the case of transgender individuals, the sex and gender that are assigned at birth, do not correspond to the individual's chosen gender identity. In most cultures, sex and gender are assigned at birth based on a binary system where sexual organs are supposed to be the gender identifier.
