Transitioning

Updated: DECEMBER 22, 2020

Transitioning is a term used to describe a transgender or transsexual person's change in gender presentation. A transgender person transitions (changes) into their preferred gender, based on how they feel inside. It may involve sex reassignment therapy and surgery. However, this is not always the case. Transgenders may choose not to have sex reassignment surgery. After all, gender presentation is holistic and involves physical, social, and emotional changes.

More About Transitioning

Transitioning is a personal decision, which may be difficult to get to given society's biases against transgenders. A transgendered individual needs to seek psychological, medical, and social support in order to ease into the process. Transitioning may take years to fully accomplish. Support and acceptance from their immediate family and social circles are important.
