Definition - What does Cervicitis mean?

Cervicitis is an inflammation of the cervix. The cervix is the lower, more narrow reigion of the uterus. In some cases, the patient might not experience any noticable symptoms. They may be completely unaware of the inflammation.

Some women with cervicitis experience changes in vaginal discharge and bleeding between menstrual cycles. Cervicitis may be caused by a variety of things including sexually transmitted infections. The condition can also evolve as a result of bacterial overgrowth which usually begins with a diagnosis of bacterial vaginosis. Since cervicitis can result from sexually transmitted infections. Preventative measures include protected sexual intercourse. Cervicitis is typically treated with antibiotics or anti-viral medications.
