Slash fiction refers to a genre of fan fiction that highlights an interpersonal attraction and depicts sexual relationships between fictional characters of the same sex. The genre places two characters together in a romantic relationship that did not exist in the characters' fictional universes.
Slash fiction is a term often exclusively referring to the fictional relationships of two male characters. The term femslash is used for female-focused slash fiction. Classic slash fiction pairs characters such as Kirk and Spock in a romantic/sexual relationship. Starsky and Hutch would be another example. Slash fiction has been noted in the LGBT community as well as the feminist community as a rebellion against the notion of compulsory heterosexuality.
