Testicular Torsion

Updated: FEBRUARY 3, 2020

Testicular torsion occurs when the spermatic cord that brings blood to the scrotum becomes twisted when a testicle rotates. This causes immediate pain and swelling due to the reduced blood flow to the area.

More About Testicular Torsion

Testicular torsion is especially common in teenage boys between ages 12-16 years although it can happen at any age. The treatment is usually emergency surgery, and the individual must be treated quickly if there is hope to save the testicle. Like any limb, if blood flow is disrupted for too long, the testicle may be too badly damaged to save.
