Vasocongestion involves the swelling of bodily tissues as a result of increased vascular blood flow and a localized increase in blood pressure. Vasocongestion occurs during periods of menstruation, emotional response, allergic reactions, and sexual arousal.
Vasocongestion is seen in the face when an individual becomes flushed. Another common cause of vasocongestion is seen in sexual arousal. When an individual becomes aroused, increased blood flow to the genitals causes swelling of the clitoris and labia minora in females and the penis in males.
