Sexual Orientation Identity

Updated: NOVEMBER 4, 2019

Sexual orientation identity is a person's conceptualization, expression, and description of their sexual orientation. Most people can identify with these identity labels: straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual, queer, or asexual. Sometimes, a person's sexual orientation identity may conflict with their sexual orientation. For example, a woman may lead a life as a straight woman, even though evidence may be contrary. She may simply believe that she is a straight woman who has lesbian tendencies or temptations. The emotional and physical attractions of a person may conflict with the sexual orientation identity they are upholding.

More About Sexual Orientation Identity

Sexual orientation identity is a person's description of their sexual orientation. However, a person's sexual orientation identity may be inaccurate if their sexual orientation and sexual orientation identity conflict. A person may identify with a sexual orientation identity that is not their true sexual orientation.
