Sex Stories We Love: Daddy Does Best, Moving Past the Past, & Accessible Action

Published: JUNE 22, 2016 | Updated: FEBRUARY 14, 2022
It's nice to see some better news related to sex. This week, we're all about dads who talk to their daughters, the reasons why we like to get it on, and how Pornhub is continuing to change the face (and the sound!) of porn...and that's just the tip of the iceberg. Finally, we take a moment to remember the beautiful souls who lost their lives in Orlando.

Daddy Does Best

As #AdultSexEdMonth continues and has helped so many over the years, it has become clear that sexual learning is a truly lifelong journey. Sometimes, it is inter-generational. It is heartening to read, with Father’s Day just past, about a dad doing his best to learn about his daughters' future menstruation needs. All too often discussions of periods become a “go ask your mom about that” situation. Of course, whether or not his daughters choose to have conversations with their dad about their cycles remains to be seen, but he’s doing all he can, including researching products, asking his partner, and speaking with friends to learn all he can. That’s parenting—not because it is exceptional, but because that is what he should be doing.

The Why

Have you ever stopped and taken into account why you have sex? Not so much in the existential and philosophical sense, bur rather on a case by case basis. Think about the last five times you've been physical and why you got jiggy with it: do any of your reasons align with the results of this survey about why we have sex? It is interesting to note that in the top 10, the slight majority of reasons were physical and pleasure-based, with emotional reasons lagging just slightly behind. Both of these types of reasons are the rosy and wonderful reasons to have sex. When you look at the least popular reason, yet reasons reported nonetheless, we find distinctly more troubling sexual options. As Justin Lehmiller notes, sex isn't just about pleasure and makin' babies!

Moving Past the Past

We've come a long way, baby! Sure, we can definitely need initiatives like #AdultSexEdMonth, but our sexual situation has certainly changed significantly over the course of human history. Consider what sex was like in Medieval times. Intestine and linen condoms (still better than LELO Hex?), almost everything fun like anal, oral, and queer sex was a sin. Missionary was expected and celibacy was prized. Sadly, we know that there are still people in the world looking to make those historical times a current reality. What's that they say about learning from the past?

Accessible Action

Love 'em or hate 'em, it is hard to deny that adult entertainment giant Pornhub is having an immeasurable impact on the porn industry. There are definitely many reasons to not want anything to do with this behemoth, but then they go ahead and do something admirable. Recently, Pornhub launched 50 clips across the sexuality spectrum that are embedded with descriptive video for those with vision challenges.

Descriptive video adds an audio track with voice actors providing descriptions of the hot action in the scene. Different jurisdictions are struggling to incorporate accessible content in online and this could be another instance of the porn industry leading the way when it comes to incorporating technology to better service customers.

Beyond Multiplication

Okay, we've been talking a lot about sex being a life-long learning journey...but did you know you should include the occasional side trip into mathematics on that adventure? Personally, I was happy to leave my studies of math behind after barely passing in high school. Yet, a recent study indicates that older folks who can still answer some mathematical problems are more likely to be getting sum...or some. The study was particularly focused on financial literacy in old age, but but as the researchers were following folks for many years, a correlation with their sex lives emerged. So, let's recap: you + math = sex. Now that adds up!

Remembering Pulse

Finally, let's remember that people, many people, are killed every year because of their sexuality. Typing that statement pains me, but it's true. We must know this and change this. Remember those who were murdered at Pulse in Orlando.
