Kinkly: Give us three words that describe your blog.

Penny: Artistic, vibrant, and liberating.

Kinkly: What inspired you to start the blog?

Penny: I used to work in a sex shop, and one of my favorite parts of the job was that I got to talk openly about sex with people on a daily basis. I also learned that that not all sex toys are created equal, and I really enjoyed helping customers choose safe, quality toys that would work well for them. I wanted to reach a bigger audience, though, to talk to even more people about sex and toys. So, I figured, hey, I should start a blog! (Then I quickly realized that it’s not as easy as it seems, but it’s worth it!)

Kinkly: What’s behind the name?

Penny: I wanted to create a spin-off of the “penny for your thoughts” saying. I also liked the name Penny. So, I created Penny for Your (Dirty) Thoughts and took on the persona of Penny. I wish I had a more exciting story, but it just sort of came to me!

Kinkly: Who’s your target reader?

Penny: What a hard question! I’d say anyone who wants to learn more about sex and sex toys, but I also get a lot of people who just like looking at my erotic images, and that’s cool too. Anyone looking for sex writing and/or erotic art, really.

Kinkly: What’s unique about your blog?

Penny: My photography makes my blog stand out - it’s usually what people remember me for and notice first. I’ve studied and am serious about photography, and it shows in the images I create. My blog is also a mix of educational and erotic - I don’t think I should have to choose if I want to write serious pieces or post sexy images. So, I do both. I’m a creative person at heart. So, every one of my posts, from self-portraits to sex toy reviews, has an artistic flair.

Kinkly: What is the topic you find yourself covering most often and why?

Penny: I have more photos on my blog than anything else, both of sex toys and portraits of myself and others. I love self-portraiture because I have complete creative control over the images. I like expressing myself and embracing body pride through imagery. I’ve also written quite a bit about the g-spot and squirting, and that’s important to me because there’s still a lot of negativity and misinformation surrounding it.

Kinkly: What was your most popular post ever? Why do you think it drew so many readers?

Penny: My most popular post is my VagCam video - it shows what the inside of my vagina looks like during orgasm, using the Svakom camera vibrator. I think it’s drawn so many people because it’s something a lot of people have felt, but haven’t actually seen. When I first got the toy, I realized it doesn’t work unless you have a clear speculum in (which of course I had already), and it felt very "Masters of Sex" when I made the video by having an orgasm for science! I think it’s pretty rad that my vagina is Internet famous - the video has had over 140,000 views and counting!

Kinkly: What’s the best thing about writing a sex blog?

Penny: All of the amazing, talented, sex positive blogger friends I’ve made!

Kinkly: What’s the worst thing about it?

Penny: I tend to surround myself with sex positive people, so I don’t get a lot of sex negativity. However, when I do, it hurts. Some people in my family know about my blog and think it’s shameful, and dealing with that has been hard.

Kinkly: OK, now for the good stuff: Give us your best tip for great sex.

Penny: This might not be what y’all want me to say, but I think the best thing is usually to ignore all of the mainstream “tips,” “tricks,” and “hacks.” I can’t help but laugh when I see magazine articles like 101 Ways to Blow His Mind During Sex. How would the author know what your partner wants during sex (or even know their gender)? There are so many different, valid ways to have sex and interact erotically. The best thing to do is to communicate your boundaries and desires and go from there.

That said, sex toys, quality lube, and positive information have all dramatically improved my (sex) life! If you want to have better sex, learn more about it. Read blogs and books, go to classes, explore, and have fun!
