Deepthroat Position

Updated: DECEMBER 14, 2022

The Deepthroat sex position is a fellatio oral sex position. This position gets its name because it makes deepthroating, the act of taking a penis or strap-on dildo deep into the throat, easier.

Deepthroat Oral Sex Position: The giving partner lies on their back near the edge of a bed or couch with their head hanging off the edge. The receiving partner stands near their face and slides their penis or strap-on dildo down the giving partner's throat.

To get into the Deepthroat position, the giving partner should lie face up on a bed, with their head hanging slightly off the edge. The penetrating partner walks to the end of the bed where their partner’s face is. From this position, the penetrating partner can slide their penis or strap-on into their partner’s mouth and down their throat. The penetrating partner may also reach around to stimulate the giving partner's genitals with their hands or with sex toys.

The penetrating partner usually controls the speed and intensity of the fellatio by thrusting in and out of their partner’s mouth. However, the receiving partner can take a little control by placing their hands on their partner’s waist, thighs or hips. This contact can encourage thrusting that suits the receiving partner better.

The Deepthroat position makes deep oral penetration easier because it aligns the receiving partner’s mouth and throat. Hanging the head off of the edge of the bed creates a straight tube from the mouth down the throat, which the penetrating partner can easily slide into.

The Deepthroat position is also known as the Throat Swab position, because the penis or strap on swabs the throat, much like a Q-tip does in a medical test. It is also called the Hanging Back position.

More About Deepthroat Position

Deepthroating is not like giving regular fellatio. Since the penis or strap-in is so deep in the throat, sucking motions are difficult. If you try, you might notice your jaw feels sore and breathing is more difficult. Instead, keep your mouth in a soft, natural O shape. The penetrating partner will find the sensation of sliding in and out is pleasurable enough without any oral sex tricks.

If you both are finding a desire to add even more stimulation, consider using a vibrator like a clitoral vibrator or penis vibrator. While it might take some help from the receiving partner to get things in place (the world looks a bit different when you're upside down!), a sex toy can stay in place nicely with just a bit of stability from the receiver's grip.

While the Deepthroat position makes deepthroating easier, some giving partners still find their gag reflex acts up. Practicing outside the bedroom is a good way to desensitize the gag reflex. Practice deepthroating items such as dildos, toothbrushes, or fingers. Hold the item in place for 10 seconds, then remove it and catch your breath before trying again. You should notice an improvement if you try these exercises a few times a week.

Injuries can occur in the Deepthroat sex position, so the penetrating partner should closely monitor the giving partner. The receiving partner should also be aware of the risks and use some caution. Asphyxiation can occur if the nose or nasal passages are blocked and the penis blocks the esophagus.

To prevent this, couples shouldn't try this position if the giving partner has nasal congestion. The giving partner could also try adjusting their breathing patterns. They could inhale when their mouth is clear or when their partner is sliding inside. Experiment with different breathing techniques to find which one works best for you.

If the penetrating partner thrusts too vigorously, they could also damage their partner’s throat and surrounding tissues. To prevent these injuries, the penetrating partner should use slow, gentle thrusts.

Since the Deepthroat position limits verbal communication, it’s a good idea to establish a hand signal or another physical safe gesture. Giving partners can use this signal if they feel their breathing is compromised or they simply want to stop. Penetrating partners should look out for this signal and stop immediately if they see it.
