A Change for the Better

A new year is almost upon us and whenever the calendar rolls over to new digits, there is often a hope of change and new things. This makes me wonder: What might be in store for us when it comes to sex? This article suggests that we just might be about to break ground on a year of “vagina-nomics” - when we finally get serious about women designing sex products for women. Seems like a pretty simple concept, right? I’m not claiming to know all about the invention of all sex products, but I’m going to take a guess based on world history that women have not always been greatly represented on the innovation and design front. Let’s support companies that are making this change happen.

Accepting Advice

We are all so routinely inundated with opinions and thoughts about sex that it can be quite challenging to shut out the voices that don’t help you while at the same time finding those that do. Historically, there have been people telling us things that were meant to shut down sexual exploration. I’m not talking about that. It is actually the opposite now. There are many people who have good intentions and will suggest great ideas - but they forget that not all sexy things feel amazing for all sexy folks. One such topic is that of vibrators for women. On one hand, women can still be pressured to feel that vibrators are a threat to male partners. On the other, there is a prevailing thought put out there that all women need, love and can orgasm from vibrators. What I'm saying is find voices that speak to you. These words from Vanessa Marin over at Bustle might open some eyes on the many different messages about vibrators that are out there.

Reviewing Reviewers

If you’ve followed the world of sex toys over the years, you've seen the explosion of review sites. If you’re wondering which products might feel great and which ones to avoid, you can simply search that item and you will surely find numerous opinions to guide your purchase. As with all reviews, you’ll surely find some voices that speak to you and your needs more than others. If you’re just discovering sex toy reviewers, here’s a great round-up to start:

Working Hard

One of the best ways to educate is to provide a new spin. For a long time, sex toys were relegated to the backs of seedy porn shops on the other side of the tracks. Both the toys and those shops badly needed a makeover to bring vibrators and dildos to people in a more palatable way. Between the 1970s and 1990s, that happened more and more, and the stores and the products took off. Essentially, they became less scary to consumers. Taking that a step further, a trip inside a huge online retailer of sex products can demystify the business that much further. For a long time there were assumptions about the people who bought and sold sex toys, well, we can only guess what people thought about people who made them! Well, they’re our neighbours, friends, and folks in line at the grocery store. Just folks.

Dildo Display

And maybe, just maybe, if we stop to remember that people who use, make and sell sex toys are just people then we’ll all be able to have a bit more of a sense of humor around sex products. I mean, when the toys are doin’ their thing with you in bed, you can be serious. But at other moments, sex toys can be fun, silly, and good for a laugh or smile. Should we, though, remember that not everybody has such an enlightened attitude to these products? This sex toy owner in Spain had a local artist paint depictions of Mary, Joseph, and Baby Jesus on glass dildos and displayed them in the window of his shop. Maybe he was hoping for a laugh. Maybe he was making a statement. What he got was protesters, a boycott, and social media action against his store. Did he go too far ... or should people just lighten up already?

What's That in Your Utility Belt, Batman?

Finally, I think this guy got off easy when he tried to rob a sex shop but was foiled by sex toy throwing staff. Have you seen the size of some dildos and butt plugs?
