The practice still exists among some of the tribes of New Zealand, Australia, Africa, and the islands of the Pacific. Western culture adopted body painting as a form of art, as well as a way to express political protest. Animal-rights group PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) popularly used body painting to protest against luxury fashion company Burberry.
