Menstruation refers to the monthly shedding of the lining of the uterus as a part of the normal menstrual cycle. If an egg is not fertilized, the lining of the uterus is shed through the vagina. This is referred to as menstruation. Menstruation is also referred to as a woman's period.

Menstruation will vary from individual to individual. Menstruation might occur every 21-35 days and can last from 2 to 7 days. In some women, menstruation is regular and occurs at regular intervals for the same duration of time with a regular flow. Though for many women, the cycle is irregular. The flow will vary from month to month as well as the duration for which the individual bleeds. Many types of contraceptives can alter the menstrual cycle. The menstrual cycle ceases when a woman becomes pregnant or enters menopause.
