The term spunk is most commonly used in the United Kingdom. According to formal records, it has been used there since at least 1888. It is less well known in the United States and other parts of the world.

According to previous editions of the Collins English Dictionary, the term spunk was once considered taboo. While it has gained mainstream acceptance now, some older or more conservative people may still object to its use.
