Gender orientation refers to how a person identifies when it comes to their gender. This does not necessarily conform with how society dictates gender orientation. It also does not need to follow the gender binary, which dictates that orientation needs to be either masculine or feminine. Gender orientation is personal.

A main discussion point when it comes to gender orientation is whether it's “nature or nurture.” There is no definitive conclusion about this. The agreement is that both socialization and biology have influences on a person's gender orientation, which is said to firmly form as early as when the child is three years old. From this age, orientation is hard to change. Efforts to do so may cause gender dysphoria.
