The sperm is the male reproductive cell. It comes from sperma, which is Greek for the word “seed.” In human males, the sperm has 23 chromosomes that can merge with the female egg's 23 chromosomes to form a diploid cell. The sperm is a necessary component in mammalian reproduction. Sperm quantity and quality are very important for pregnancy. Only one sperm can fertilize a female's egg.
