“You take the good, you take the bad,
you take them both and there you have
The facts of life, the facts of life. “

These are just some of the lyrics to the iconic coming-of-age sitcom "The Facts of Life." Don’t they still ring true today? In this week’s Sex Stories We Love, we take a look at the good and the bad in different situations affecting sex in the world.

Dick Pic Display

You’ve got to love it when sex and art come together. How pleasant would it be to gaze upon the beauty of a stunning oil-on-canvas masterpiece that delicately captures the human form in post-orgasmic repose? However, art isn’t always about pleasantries. Art can be a call to action, the rousing of debate. Whitney Bell's gallery show of the unsolicited dick pics that she's received masterfully brings attention to the scourge of online harassment. Bell makes note of what unsolicited dick pics are really about - power, not sex. So, she’s taken that power back, taken these images that she never asked for and turned them into an exhibit for all to see. Remember, for all of the beautiful art in the world, there are also ugly pieces - and these are, perhaps, the most important of all. This isn’t a comment on the penises, but their owners' ugly intent.

Pro Photos

Sometimes business is just business. That’s what a lot of people don’t realize about the sex industry. There are videos and images floating around online of workers in factories casually manufacturing dildos. Porn performers are sharing their experiences on set. Ask an erotica writer what they were wearing when they wrote their hottest story and there’s a good chance it was sweatpants. So too with escorting. When you peruse ad after ad hoping to find the perfect companion, remember all of those photographs were taken by someone. If you’re an escort working in Montreal, you’ve probably heard of escort image extraordinaire DannyGirl. I’ve been a big fan of DannyGirl’s photography since I interviewed her years ago, and it's nice to see her unique work being showcased. She takes commercial photography and brings it to a new level, while at the same time recognizing the authenticity of these workers. Great stuff!

Conjugal Sex Work

There are many different stories out there about the various benefits that sex workers bring to clients. So many that I really wonder why there is still debate about the legitimacy of sex work, particularly in the eyes of governmental regulations. Fortunately, there are small steps being taken around the world to advance change and increase understanding of sex workers and their services. This couple, in need of a sex worker to help save their sex lives due to pain and disability, made a successful application to the New Zealand government. Their conjugal help is funded! This recognition of the need and the importance of sex by officials is an important step other jurisdictions should emulate.

Ass-Backwards Britons

Oh, Great Britain, you great, big sexual fear-mongering mess. In an attempt to further its increasing campaign to stamp out pornography, British government officials have now gotten their heads stuck up their asses about what other people want to stick up their own asses! Citing porn (of course) as the main culprit, the government says more and more people are trying anal sex than ever before. And the problem with this is …? Despite evidence that indicates that porn is just one of many reasons for the increase in bum fun, this justification better suits the British government's needs as they try to regulate the porn industry. We are not amused.

Pussy Probiotics?

This is how science happens, people! Someone sees a result and wonders how that result can be attained. Then, they see correlations and theorize whether or not that result will still be attained with the introduction of new correlations. While this article doesn’t actually get around to the testing part of whether it is possible to maintain enough good gut probiotic bacteria through cunnilingus, I definitely applaud the gumption of Vice contributor Bethy Squires for digging into this question. The human body is a dazzling ecosystem of countless interactive parts. Surely sexual activity must play a crucial role in the continual interplay happening between our systems. This thought-process does actually seem plausible, unlike the long-standing idea that blow jobs provide a protein boost.

One-Way Train?

Despite the possibility that going down on vulva just might be good for you (I’m still holding out hope), a recent study found that there is still an alarming discrepancy between who will and will not take the downtown train. Women are far more likely to perform oral sex on men by a huge margin. And sorry, I’m picking on Brits again because this study asked a variety of English folks about their attitudes toward oral on men and women. It was deemed easier on men and more distasteful when performed on women. Distasteful is actually one of the nicer bits of data collected. These participants' view of cunnilingus, the vulva, and female sexuality is rampantly misogynistic and frightening. Maybe some ethical, sex-positive porn would help?
