Top

Updated: JUNE 1, 2016

In the context of BDSM, a top is the term given to the individual who assumes the controlling or dominant role over a submissive participant or bottom. Tops are often in complete control of their "subserviant" partners. For example, they may humiliate them, punish them, and order them to perform certain sexual acts.

More About Top

Tops are known by many names. The names that they choose to use are largely determined by gender and personal preference. A female-presenting top may be referred to as a Mistress, Dominatrix, Madame, Goddess, or Mommy. A male-presenting top may be referred to as a Master, Dominant, Sir, or Daddy.

As tops and bottoms may not be in a power exchange relationship at all, honorifics may not be used at all. The term "top" or "bottom" may simply be used to designate who is doing - or receiving - an activity. No power exchange relationship is required for that.
