Third Gender

Updated: JULY 1, 2019

Third gender is a term that is used to define a gender that is not male or female. Third gender refers to the gender, or lack of defined gender, that an individual identifies with rather than the biological sex of an individual.

More About Third Gender

Third gender describes a gender identity outside the black and white categories of man and woman. This gender group may include individuals that identify as both male and female or those who have a gender neutral expression. North American culture traditionally acknowledges only male and female as genders, but in other cultures there are third and fourth genders. In India, transgendered individuals are recognized as third gender in terms of legal status.
