Labiaplasty

Updated: DECEMBER 24, 2018

Labiaplasty is a procedure that trims and shapes the inner, outer, or both sets of labia. Some women undergo labiaplasty because their labia have become elongated or uneven due to childbirth or just the normal aging process. Unusually enlarged or elongated labia can cause pain during intercourse, exercise, or even while wearing tight jeans.

More About Labiaplasty

This surgery is usually done with local anesthetic on an outpatient basis. It takes about two hours. The cuts made to the labia are repaired with dissolvable stitches. There is discomfort afterward that can be controlled with an over-the-counter pain medication. Some doctors may also prescribe an antibiotic to reduce the risk of infection.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is against this procedure. They have stated that the risks outweigh the benefits.
